Daigo Saito is one of the most decorated drift drivers in the world. After clinching the Formula D championship last October, Saito is now the only driver to claim both the D1GP and Formula D championships.

The car you see here is the Lexus SC430 Daigo built with his team in Japan before the season started. He then transported it to the U.S. to pursue the Formula D championship as a rookie. With a rumored 1,200 hp and nearly 1,000 lb-ft of torque, this car is anything short of amazing.

Daigo Saito in his Formula Drift competition car. Photo credit: PASMAG.com

This drift car started as a standard Lexus SC430 before it was stripped to the bare shell and prepped by Saito and his team. The car received a Formula D-legal cage and a majority of the body panels were either replaced with Seibon Carbon pieces or trimmed down to the bare minimum in an effort to reduce the weight.

A pair of Bride seats and Prodrive harnesses keep the driver and passenger secured. All dash components were removed and replaced with carbon fiber blockoff plates. Replacing the center console is a custom carbon fiber switch panel that contains the Blitz boost controller, the push-start ignition, a gauge to monitor the bottle pressure on the Nitrous system in the trunk and switches for features like the wipers, electrical and other systems.

Under the hood, the Lexus looks surprisingly empty. In an effort to prevent any car-to-car contact from disabling the vehicle, many components were moved to the trunk. The 2JZGTE motor, most commonly found in the twin turbo Toyota Supra, is stroked from the stock 3.0-liter to 3.4-litres via a Brian Crower stroker kit with internals including: a custom set of JE Pistons, BC pro series connecting rods, and BC 272 VVTI cams.

Looking under the trunk, all the luggage space is taken up by engine components. The custom fuel cell, KOYO oil cooler and radiator cooler and associated catch cans take up the majority of the room, with the 10 lb. nitrous bottle and associated bottle warmer taking up space on the passenger side of the trunk. On the driver side, the Odyssey battery and tie-down sit on the trunk floor and the AEM methanol injection pump is mounted on the shock tower. All sheet metal behind the rear shock towers was removed and reinforced with custom tubing (per the legalities of Formula D), helping to reduce weight and reinforce the area which contains many valuable systems of the car.

Suspension is one of the most vital parts of a drift car and Saito decided to use components similar to what he ran on his past JZX Toyota Chaser chassis. All four corners contain DG5 coil-overs with custom-rated SWIFT springs, while all suspension arms are replaced with adjustable IKEYA Formula arms. Stopping power is handled by lightweight six-piston Wilwood calipers on the front, with four-piston calipers on each rear corner hooked up to the hydraulic hand brake.

In his inaugural season in Formula D, Saito took home two event wins, two additional podiums and a top-four finish on the way to the championship. Winning the championship as a rookie has never been achieved. If that’s not enough, Saito also won his second consecutive Formula D Asia title, competing in a similarly-built Lexus IS chassis. Can Saito become the first driver to repeat back-to-back championships since Tanner Foust? We can only wait and see.

Moto IQ’s Annie Sam:

What was supposed to have only been a simple six month project to boost Project Civic EJ’s performance with basic bolt-on applications has turned into a two year journey when we blew our head gasket at Buttonwillow Raceway.

Fast forward two years and Project Honda Civic EJ was finally turning the corner to focus more on finishing the build. But then again… as any gearhead would question, are you really ever finished?

Moto IQ’s Project Civic. Photo credit: MotoIQ.com.

Flashy has never been our style, and we prefer to let our time slips do the talking for us, which is why we decided to keep most of Project Honda Civic EJ’s styling clean and subtle. Besides the Enkei PF01′s rims wrapped in Nitto NT01′s and Skunk2 Megapower Exhaust, the only other major visible modification we opted for was a carbon fiber hood from Seibon Carbon Products.

Moto IQ’s Project Civic in Enkei PF01′s rims wrapped in Nitto NT01′s. Photo credit: MotoIQ.com.

Let us rewind a bit so that you can get a greater appreciation of how far this project has come by showing you where it came from. At the beginning of this project, the chassis was pushing 270,000 miles on a clutch that had about 120,000 miles on it and a stock B18C1 which was swapped into the car at the same time. To put things in perspective, the miles I had driven with this car could’ve taken me on 34 trips around the earth.

The paint was faded, the trim was cracked, and the door panels battle scarred and war-torn from years of parking in undersized stalls next to oversized SUVs. Throw in a couple of track battle scars collected at places such as turn 10 at Streets of Willow Springs, or turn 15 at Auto Club Speedway and you can only imagine how beat down my little Civic looked.

My little rendezvous with the tire wall at Auto Club Speedway is why I needed to replace my hood, so what better opportunity than this to replace it with a carbon fiber one? I was pretty excited about getting a new hood because since I was 16, I had always wanted a carbon fiber hood. Back then, my only reason was just because they looked so cool. Now that I’m older and wiser, I was also excited for the weight reduction that it gave us.

MotoIQ weighs the Civic’s OEM hood. Photo credit: MotoIQ.com.

The stock hood weighed in at 33 pounds.

MotoIQ weighs Seibon Carbon's OEM-style carbon fiber hood. Photo credit: MotoIQ.com.

The Seibon carbon fiber hood weighed in at 19 pounds… that’s a 14 pound weight reduction!

Check out the fiberglass skeleton on the bottom side of the hood, you can see that it’s pretty sturdy. This is one of the important things to look for when shopping for a carbon fiber hood. Some of the cheaper brands skimp out on the support, which makes them flimsy and prone to warping.

Another thing to pay attention to are the weaves in the carbon fiber. Seibon uses full single sheets for a clean continuous weave. Fitment is also important. This hood was perfectly shaped and fit as snug as my OEM hood.

How the epoxy is laid also makes a difference in the structural support of the hood, as well as the pattern of the weave. Notice how the weaves are all straight and aligned? In lower quality carbon fiber products, you will often see waves and bumps in the weave – which are usually the result of a lack of attention to detail.

The makeover that we decided to give Project Civic was long overdue and well deserved for a car that had been my old faithful for so many years. We decided to take our Civic to the Maaco Auto Body shop in Riverside, California to straighten out her lines and to give her a fresh paint job.

Keep in mind also that we understood the compromise in the end result of what we were looking for. This was never going to be a show car, and it was probably going to see more track days after this project was completed. We weren’t exactly looking for the polished show car finish paint job that you would expect to see at your local Hot Import Nights, just a presentable, track ready machine.

While we were at it, we brought in my new Seibon carbon fiber hood to have it cleared/UV coated. Although Seibon’s carbon products all come with an epoxy coating which is already pretty high quality to begin with, it didn’t cost us that much more to throw it in with the pile of fenders and bumpers that we were getting painted at Maaco. An extra UV coating never hurts, especially if you don’t have to go out of your way to get it done.

It only took Maaco one week to get the dings removed, and the car painted. With the exterior done and the engine build in its final stages of being completed, our next step is to take it out to Buttonwillow to see what she can do.

The Lucas Oil UK Drift Team kicked off their 2013 season at the first round of the British Drift Championship on April 13 and 14 at Lydden Hill Race Circuit in the South East of the UK.

With months of major redevelopment on the Supra, the team was confident in the new set-up. The new set-up sees the car take the Lucas Oil UK Drift Team Colours and name under the Lucas Oil Motorsport Programme, change of suspension thanks to Wisefab and MeisterR Coilovers, a new Garrett Turbocharger supplied in the UK by Universal Turbos, and a new set of custom embroidered Suzuka GT seats from Cobra Seats in the UK. The Seibon Carbon hood, trunk, and set of doors remain for weight savings.

The Lucas Oil UK Drift Team/ Seibon Carbon Toyota Supra at Round 1 of the Maxxis British Drift Championship.

As the competition started Mark Luney, driver of the Lucas Oil Supra, was drawn against a newcomer to the Super Pro ranks, Jamie Kenyon in the top 16 battle. Kenyon admitted he “got lost in the smoke screen” when following the Supra and ended up in the gravel trap on turn one, handing Mark the pass to the top 8.

In Top 8 Mark Luney was paired with Mark Huxley’s V8 Volvo Estate. Luney led the first run and recorded the fastest speed of the day at 84mph into the first corner. On the second run, Luney stuck to the driver’s door for the majority of the lap, moving him on to the semi-final.

The Lucas Oil UK Drift Team/ Seibon Carbon Toyota Supra at Round 1 of the Maxxis British Drift Championship.

His next opponent was one that Luney regularly found himself up against in the 2012 championship, Paul Smith of Team Japspeed. The first run saw Luney create a gap the length of six cars on the lead run into the final corner- giving him the advantage into the next run.

During the second run Luney stuck to Smith’s door but the Supra seemed to be losing power, causing the Supra to straighten slightly. This wasn’t a massive mistake but the battle was given to Paul Smith.

Mark Luney in the Toyota Supra against Paul Smith in the Nissan S15.

Not all hope was lost as there was still an opportunity of securing a spot on the podium. The battle for 3rd place would be against David Waterworth in his Viper powered S15.

Luney led the first run. It was a close battle around turns one and two but still the Supra pulled a huge six car length, giving Luney another advantage going into the final run of the day.

Mark Luney in the Toyota Supra against David Waterworth in his Viper powered S15.

On the second run Luney mirrored the S15’s every move, until the final straight of the track where the car lost all power causing the Supra to once again straighten. As a result Waterworth won the battle and took 3rd place.

Lucas Oil UK/ Seibon Carbon Toyota Supra at Round 1 of the Maxxis British Drift Championship.

Over the course of the weekend, the whole of the Lucas Oil UK Drift Team worked tirelessly to get the car out on track to compete against the best line up of drivers the British Drift Championship has ever seen. The team’s hard work was rewarded with Mark Luney qualifying 1st place and finishing in 4th place. After Round 1 the Lucas Oil Supra stands in overall 3rd in the Championship.

Round two of the British Drift Championship will be held at Pembrey Circuit in Wales on June 8th and 9th. Stay tuned for more updates!

Seibon Carbon drivers Matt Powers and Walker Wilkerson took the podium for Motegi’s Super Drift Challenge at Grand Prix in Long Beach- Powers taking 1st place and Wilkerson taking 3rd.

Powers qualified second with a 90.9 point run Friday night. He got a by-run against Kyle Mohan who had blown his engine on Friday and was not able to compete. He then faced and defeated Jeff Jones, and moved on to face Aasbo in the final 4. In the finals Powers was inches from Essa the whole course and then did an insane flick on his lead run sealing the win.

“After that awesome of a battle, I didn’t really care if I won it or not” Powers said after his first event win.

Matt Powers against Fredric Aasbo.
As for Walker Wilkerson, the 3rd place finish was an awesome way to “break” his new chassis in. Many may not be aware that his practice runs were the very first time he drove the new car/motor setup!

Congratulations to both Matt Powers and Walker Wilkerson. Up next is Formula Drift round 2 Atlanta May 10th -11th.

Seibon Carbon is proud to announce its 2013 Formula Drift Drivers. Woohoo!

This will be the beginning of an exciting new season where Seibon Carbon driver and 2012 Formula Drift Champion Daigo Saito comes back to defend his title. Will Daigo Saito take the championship once again or will it be another Seibon driver? The answer is uncertain as this year Seibon has partnered up with many talented drivers.

Here is the lineup for 2013 Seibon Carbon Formula Drift drivers (in no particular order) :

Daigo Saito- Took the 2012 Formula Drift Championship in his “rookie” year. He is a Japanese professional drift driver, currently competing in the D1 Grand Prix series and holds the distinction of being the first driver to win the two drifting majors, D1GP in 2008 and Formula D in 2012. Seibon Carbon sponsors his Lexus SC430 with a hood, trunk, and set of doors.

Chris Forsberg- Earned the title of 2009 Formula Drift Champion as well as Triple Crown Champion. Forsberg was not only the first driver to win both titles in the same year but is the first driver to win a Championship whose career originated in grassroots drifting. Chris
has been on Seibon Carbon’s team since he started racing in Formula D (10 years)! His Nissan 370z is sponsored with Seibon Carbon hood, trunk, fenders, doors, and rear spoiler.

Conrad Grunewald- Conrad drives a 2010 Camaro SS equipped with a Seibon Carbon hood, trunk, set of fenders, and side skirts. Conrad’s first year of drifting was in the D1 series in 2004, where he was one of 12 drivers representing the USA in the USA vs. Japan shootout.

Patrick Mordaunt- “Pat” races in Formula Drift in the A’PEXi/PM Racing Lexus SC430. He started his drifting career at the age 14. The SC430 is running a Seibon Carbon dry carbon hood, trunk, and set of doors.
